Hi,
The man on the right is a Private in the infantry.  Almost certainly in World War One. His cap badge appears to be that of an infantry regiment - The Royal Fusiliers. The badge on his left cuff is that of a Lewis Gunner. If you Google images on 'WW1 Lewis Gunner badge british army' you will see similar badges.
The man on the left appears to be a sailor - but not Royal Navy. Better informed people might be able to identify the Shipping Line by his cap badge but he appears to be wearing a civilian uniform. That said, whilst he was not (in this photo) in the Royal Navy, being a member of The Merchant Marine was still very dangerous in WW1.
Good luck with your research.
Simon
PS As neither is wearing any medal ribbons, it is likely this photo is during the war rather than in the last two years or post-War.

One other thing. I suggest you have this post moved to the 'Armed Forces' board - you will get lots more replies there.
Regards.

Hi TreeTotal: thanks for your reply

Hi SiGr: thanks for the info. Since both men were born 1899/1900 they seem a bit young to be active in WWI, but it's possible I guess.
I posted another photo of the man on the left, and someone replied that he served overseas, do you agree with this conclusion ?

Hi, missmarple,
The dates are interesting. Plenty of young men enlisted 'under-age' but to my untrained eye these both look older than 18. So maybe the photo is post-WW1.
The answer might well be in the uniforms - it is remarkable how much info people who know about these things can provide. For example, they can tell you when a type of belt was introduced (or discontinued), or a style of collar was changed, etc. To get that input, do consider moving your post to the 'Armed Forces' board.
Sorry I cannot be more help than that.

Now that this post has been moved to the ‘Armed Forces’ board, can anybody add anything to the comments so far ?
