Henry William PORTER, born 13 Nov 1824, Bethnal Green
« on: Wednesday 08 July 20 01:16 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I am researching the family of Henry William Porter, Licensed Victualler, born 13 Nov 1824, baptised 7 Feb 1826, St Matthew Bethnal Green.
He married Sarah Hannah Porter 20 May 1846, Parish Church, Bow, Middlesex.
Henry's parents were William Porter, Licensed Victualler, and Sarah Ann, surname unknown.

I have traced the family of wife Sarah Hannah Porter but have reached a brick wall with Henry's ancestry. I would be grateful for any leads there.

It is thought that this family was related to Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) who married Susannah Kennet (c.1712-c.1781) in Chelsea, London. They had a son, George Philip Ehret, who became an apothecary at Watford, Hertfordshire. I have not yet found any links with the Porter family.

Thanks,
John

Hi John.
On the Ancestry image of the marriage, I think the small writing under the occupation of Licensed Victualler for Henry's father William could be an abbreviation of Publican.

Not sure it's of much help though.
Sue

According to his baptism his mother was a plain Sarah (not Sarah Ann).

"...(Henry William PORTER) married Sarah Hannah PORTER 20 May 1846, Parish Church, Bow, Middlesex.

I have traced the family of wife Sarah Hannah PORTER "

When you are researching the origins of a PORTER who married a PORTER......and you know the origins of one PORTER...it would be useful to give this information to a forum.....the better to eliminate PORTERs who are from Sarah Hannah's family.

What do you have for parents and siblings of Sarah Hannah PORTER.

Hi all, hope this isn't too much information.
Edward Porter and Mary Ann Lawford's family (Sarah Hannah Porter's siblings):

1. Mary Ann Porter born 11 Sep 1808, Finchley, Middlesex, died Apr-Jun 1891, Hackney.
She did not marry and was housekeeper for her brother Robert.

2. Elizabeth Porter born 1812, Highgate, Middlesex
She last appears in the 1851 census living with her brother Robert and sisters Mary Ann and Maria at 6 Regent Place, Tower Hamlets.

3. Robert Storks Porter born about 1814, Highgate, Middlesex, was head of household in several censuses with his unmarried sisters. He was a house and estate agent and later an accountant, did not marry, and died Apr 1893 in Kensington, London. It is possible he was the uncle who sponsored art lessons for his niece Sarah Ann Porter.

4. Joseph Porter born about 1819, City Road, Finsbury, Middlesex married Elizabeth Davies (born about 1817, Gorsley, Monmouthshire) and they lived Trevethin, Monmouthshire. Joseph was a confectionery maker and died 25 October 1862 in Pontypool, Monmouthshire, Wales.

5. Sarah Hannah Porter born 15 Apr 1821, Highbury, Hornsey, Middlesex married Henry William Porter
20 May 1846, St Mary Stratford Bow, Parish of Bow, Middlesex (see above). She died Jul 1874, Old Mile End Road, Tower Hamlets.

6. William Bryan Porter born 14 Jul 1823, Hornsey, Middlesex. Nothing further known.

7. Maria Porter born about 1826, Stepney, Middlesex, last appears in 1881 census living with her brother Robert at 315 Portobello Road, Chelsea, London. She was a dressmaker.

8. George Henry Porter born about 1829, Stepney, Middlesex, married Myra Arabella Clark (1847-1899) 10 Jul 1864, Swansea, Glamorganshire, Wales.
They had nine children, some born in Swansea, some in Stepney, London, and some in Crayford, Kent.
Those that married, lived and died in England. George, an optician, died Jul 1899, in Kent.

Note that Rev Edward Porter (1760-1834) married twice. His married his second wife Mary Ann Teulon (1766-1852) 14 Apr 1801, St Margaret Pattens, London.
They had four children:
Mary Ann Porter born 1806, died between 1881-1891, married Thomas Challis.
Sarah Porter born 1808, died 1891, married Thomas Toke Lynch, Sep 1849.
Rev Seymour Teulon Porter born 1809, died 1890, married
1. Martha Kentish (1813-1849) Apr 1839, Lambeth, London
They had five children,
2. Mary Ann Catherine Higginbotham (1822-1886) 1850, Gorbals, Lanarkshire
They also had five children.

Thanks for reading this.

Is the William Porter of the Blind Beggar, probate 25/2/1834, the father of Henry William?

When youngest child William was baptised 1833 address was Whitechapel Road, and the Blind Beggar was (is) in Whitechapel Road?   It's a detailed will with executors appointed and from what I can gather whilst I can see mention of a daughter and sons they do not appear to be named suggesting they were very young.   Unless I missed it I can't see anything regarding name of wife to confirm if it is 'your' man.
