If you're new to family history and you've already gotten back to your 7th-great-grandfather, I'd say you're off to a great start!
My response to your question would be: it depends. It depends on what interests you.
When I started researching my husband's tree, he had little to no interest in his distant ancestors; he told me that he wanted to learn more about his paternal grandparents, whom he knew as a boy. Over time, as I found more info about his grandparents, this led to learning more about their parents, and so on, and my husband was always interested to hear about them, because their lives led to his grandparents' lives.
Also: the great thing about the long-departed is that they're not going anywhere, so even if you're not keen to research your 7th-great-grandfather right now, you might decide to do so at some other time.
Regards,
Josephine
