Military Issue Spoon & Watch
« on: Thursday 09 July 20 12:32 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I have had 2 military items come into my possession in the last week. My Nan (97!) has gone into a home and her house is being sold - my aunts and uncles have been quite selfish in all this, and taken most of the items despite me being the family history geek! Anyway.

I don't THINK they belong to my Granddad or G Grandad, but there is a spoon (attached) with the engraving 164275 - is it WW1 or 2? I am guessing that service number and I can't work out the letters.

The second is a watch (that is still ticking) that I have done some digging on....

James John Weaver.
He was born 14th April 1881 in Bethnal Green, London
12453 was his service number.
Royal Marines Light Infantry
HMS Canada Portsmouth Division (10/8/15 - 3/8/19)
His enlistment was 6th June 1902.

I am not sure the link to my family!

Sarah

Have you searched parentage of James John Weaver to see if he fits anywhere, or, he might have been a friend

Although his Royal Marine service record gives his dob as April 1881 I think it should be 1883, the 1901 census shows him as 17. There is a birth registered for James John Henry Weaver in Bethnall Green 1883, mother's maiden name Henshaw. He does not seem to be on the 1939 Register and he may have died in 1935 Shoreditch.

His wife was Rose Alma Cousins and they married in 1906 at Gosport, her father's name was Alfred John Cousins and a witness was Frederick Cousins. Do these ring any bells?

As Crumblie has stated
The 1883 one looks as if his mother's maiden name was Henshaw which refers to birth registration on ONS, 1883 June qtr Bethnal Green ref 1c 273

Not really sure where this is leading to
BUT
James John Weaver was widowed by 1891, I think Emma Julie died 1890

on 1891 with Henry and Annie weaver there are 2 grandchildren
Annie aged 9
James aged 8

30/10/1880 St Jude Bethnal Gtreen
James Weaver aged 27 father Henry occ porter
married
Emma Julia Henshaw aged 30, father John William Henshaw, occ looks like surgeon dec
both signed
witnesses Michael and Sarah Henshaw

I really don't know if this is your James born 1881 and he lied at enlisting, many did or whether the James with Emma is a completely different set of parents

Would b interested in any other persons view on this

If the letters on the spoon read R.E. then it belonged to 164275 Spr. John Scrase.
It's a WW1 number.
