ON-LINE SPEAKER IS DR. PENNY WALTERS talking on ‘THE 1939 REGISTER’.
On 1st September 1939 Germany marched in to Poland, triggering an agreement of mutual assistance between Poland and Britain. The next day Britain issued the Germans with an ultimatum: “Exit Poland, or a state of war will exist between us”. On 3rd September war was declared. The 1939 Register was taken 26 days later on 29th September. It was devised to produce 40 million Identity Cards for when rationing was introduced.
The information recorded provides a huge bridge between the 1911 Census and 1939. People were more ‘honest’ in their information, e.g. providing exact dates of birth, to gain their allocated rations. From 1948 the Register was used as the National Health Service Register, and was updated until 1991, giving women’s new surnames when they got married, hand-written above their name.
The online UK 1939 Register is a relatively unknown but useful tool for all genealogists including those from outside the UK. What is the Register? Where does it cover? Where can you find it? What information is included? Why is it useful? Along with other sources from that time period, Penny will give practical examples to aid all researchers.
Dr. Penny Walters gained her PhD by researching ethical dilemmas, and she has been a University Lecturer in Psychology and Business Studies for 30 years. Adoptee Penny lectures internationally, hosts webinars about genealogical topics, and regularly writes articles for Family Tree magazine amongst others. DNA testing and collaboration with 2nd and 3rd cousin matches has revealed 94% Irish heritage, and has also revealed fascinating insights into her 6 mixed race children’s cultural heritage. Penny has also published two books, ‘Ethical Dilemmas in Genealogy’ and ‘The Psychology of Searching’.
