Thank you again. This is both marvellous and inspiring.

Leonard was shown as a Publishers Clerk on the 1911 census.

I will definitely follow the advice and obtain birth certificates. They are nice to have anyway.

When I was Executor for my Uncle's will (he was Herbert Smith's son) I came across the box full of photographs. I am so lucky but sadly though hardly any are marked with who they are or dates. In the box, which I believe belonged to my Nan, was her 'birthday dates' book and that is how I know the name Phyllis Hodgson. Strangely though the Smith's hardly feature in the birthday book at all and I wonder how many of the unknown photos are actually of the Smith's. Given all this new information I can at least eliminate some names and narrow things own a bit.

Given all the wonderful information I received from Rootschatters yesterday (seriously impressive) I tried to progress on investigations myself but even then I could not find a death date for Lilian Alice Ormsby Smith. I tried all sorts of variations including Lily which she seemed to be known as on the electoral role. Has anyone had different results than I?

Once again thank you so much

MCKHA kindly wrote yesterday that Leonard's birthday was

SMITH, LEONARD       LUCKHURST
GRO Reference: 1891  S Quarter in WEST HAM  Volume 04A  Page 160

I have Leonard baptised at St James, Forest Gate on 4th June 1891 along with brothers Sydney, Horace and sisters Mabel Victoria and Ruth Emmeline Salmon.

Perhaps they registered Leonard somewhat later. I will definitely follow the advice and obtain the birth certificate. It would be super to have anyway for them all.

I expect you have all noticed that some of the Smith girls have many christian names but the boys don't! Not only that the girls names seem quite unusual, e.g. Emmeline, Ormesby, Salmon. I cannot see any link to previous Family surnames or maiden names at all. Maybe you have witnessed this before too?

Oh and whilst I wrote I recalled that Sydney Smith seems to have disappeared too.

Sydney married Florence Hollis Bailey in 1910 at the Register Office, West Ham and they had a daughter, Florence Irene Smith, very shortly afterward.

Florence Irene has also disappeared from the scene after living with her Mother in Strone Road, Forest Gate in 1939.

Florence Hollis Bailey died on 28th July 1963 and her probate shows her estate left to a Bernard Clinton Newby. I find no family link to Bernard at all except he was a schoolteacher as was Florence Hollis Smith nee Bailey father.

Bernard moved into the Florence Hollis house in Strone Road, Forest Gate until his death.

Anyway the point I am making badly is that I presume Sydney Smith and Florence Irene Smith must have deceased prior to Florence Hollis in July 1963. Again I struggle to find a closure for them.I think I need to go back to school!

Your help and kind assistance is wonderful and I just cannot thank you enough.

There's a Florence I Smith death in Sep 1949 East Ham age 39 that might be her.

Perhaps they registered Leonard somewhat later.

Just for info, and apologies if you already know this, but births are registered in quarters (March June September December) so a baptism or birth in June registered in the September quarter is perfectly ok.

I cannot thank you enough Rootschatters for all the information you have given me over the past hours. You are absolutely splendid.

I think we have found all the Smith children now and with the exception of Lilian Alice Ormesby Smith we have birth and death dates. Did anyone have any luck with Lily or has the trail gone cold at the 1964 electoral census when she is sharing a property with Phyllis Hodgson and two people named Seitz at 87 Earlham Grove West Ham.

Knowing the final outcome of Lily (death date etc) would truly be the icing on the cake.

Many thanks once again
Roger
