Sponsor at baptism of one of Amy's children is Mary Elizabeth Sturgess:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:33S7-9TWM-SCCS?i=30&cc=1468076&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AKYJZ-CVQ

At another the sponsors are George Sturgess and Harry Sturgess (perhaps a brother?)

Going back to England, and with the disclaimer that this is very much a possible link and unproven:
A possible baptism would be this Amy Harrison, daughter of Elizabeth (residence Workhouse) baptised in St Pancras in 1870:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSFH-RC3P?i=96

This Elizabeth entered the workhouse Oct 2nd from 33 Red Hill Street, and was born 1848. A servant, she was admitted for "lying in" (to have her baby only), and both left the workhouse 29th October 1870.

This looks like them together in 1871 in some sort of institution in Marylebone

Some possibilities would be that George knew her in England and paid for her passage out so they could marry, that she was brought out with a family she worked for, or that her trip out was organised and paid for by one of the emigration societies.

hi,
    family search has baptisms of
Charles Edwin Reid 22 sept 1898 son of Thomas and Amy.
Jane Florence Reid 19 july 1894 daughter of Thomas and Amy.
These may have been siblings of my grandmother Alice Reid born 28 june 1903- problem is I cannot find Alice on family search to confirm this.

Do you think that the Alice Emily death, age 13, daughter of George Sturgess in 1907 is a sister?

The baptisms of children I can see to Thomas and Amy Reid are:
James Alexander 1892
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QVS4-ZHGW
(mentions Burgersdorp)
Jane Florence 1894
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KYJZ-CVQ
Charles Edwin 1898
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KYJZ-7Z3
Alice 1903
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KYJZ-Q2Z
Irene Jessie 1906
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KYJZ-HSB

Thomas' 1939 death notice:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-C91Q-FQJM-7?i=758&cc=2517051&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQPQ7-GXR1
This gives living children as (my best guesses handwriting is bad)
Elizabeth Blanch Hewitt (marriage: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KDCY-5GT )
Jennie Florence Kent - also signs the document
Charles Edward Reid
Alice Brown
Irene Jessie Richards
Christine Leon

This looks like Irene Jessie's burial:
