Sorry for asking a supid question but can someone tell me how l can attach a document to a post in my personal message section-

You can't unless you have documents on another site and can link via a url  link

Not the whole image, only a small portion as there are copyright issues. The only way is to send via e-mail to whoever you want to receive them.
