Fleming

Is there any way to find an ancestor called John Fleming from Armagh. His son George Fleming is down in a Scottish census as being born in Tynan, Armagh. He was born in 1779 there. I know there are lots of records with addresses, hearths, tithes, flax growers etc but I don't know where to start. I don't know where George got married to a Margaret Henthorn. I can't find them in Ireland or Scotland anywhere. They lived in Lanarkshire in Scotland until they died and had a large family. One of their sons Thomas (my ancestor) is down as being born in Northern Ireland in 1810 so i thought Margaret was from there. Her name Henthorn is only prevalent in Northern England. When she died her death certificate stated father Thomas Henthorn and Mother Unknown. Any ideas friends? Pat

I see a couple of Henthorns in Armagh but they were all around the time Margaret died which was 13th January 1857.

Freeholder Records available online at the PRONI site indicate only one George Fleming -- all noted in a townland written as Corclea or Coolkill.  Earliest is 1818., along with a William Fleming and a Robert Fleming.  In 1826, there's now a Richard Fleming also listed.

Coolkill is a townland in Clonfeacle Parish in Co. Tyrone but it sits right on the border with Co. Armagh.

Good to find the one in Tynan which matches Scottish census info.

you are correct that Henthorn comes from England but there are Henthorn's in Ireland from the time of Cromwell.

Margaret Henthorn is a common name in my ancestral family.  You will find many Henthorn's in Ireland in county Cavan in the early 1800's.  Through the 1800's most left Ireland and the last Henthorn in Cavan died in the 1980's.

My GG Grandfather Thomas Henthorn had a sister Margaret.  She was  a witness to his wedding in Hemmingford Quebec Canada in 1849.  Thomas had emigrated in 1846 with his brother Adam. I do not know when Margaret came to Canada.

Hope this all helps
