Hello, I am looking for history of Alexander Hunter, born to John Hunter and Mary Campbell(?). Alexander married Agnes Scott and had: William, Mary, Marian, John and Miles.

William Scott Hunter married Alice Sarah Adie (apparently from Clan Gordon) and had Herbert Scott Hunter, my great grand-father.

Alice Sarah Adie (apparently from Clan Gordon)

Maybe. Maybe not.

Adie is a patronymic surname, derived from Adam. The Brigadoon industry will tell you that surnames derived from the given name Adam - Adams, Adamson, Addison, Addie, Adie and many more - are septs of Clan Gordon. This is on the basis that the given name Adam is common among the Gordons, and that such surnames are fairly common in Aberdeenshire and nearby.

A few moments' thought, however, will tell you that it impossible for every person who bears one of these surnames to have any connection to Clan Gordon. Adam is a biblical name, and surnames derived from it have arisen all over the Judaeo-Christian world.

So please don't waste time and effort on researching possible links with Clan Gordon unless and until you find a proveable link to an actual ancestor somewhere in the lands of Clan Gordon.
