65th Regiment of foot
« on: Monday 13 July 20 06:39 BST (UK) »
Hi
I'm trying to locate a soldier (I assume a private) serving in the 65th in New Zealand. I think he arrived in Wellington NZ on 18 Dec 1852 on board the True Briton with wife (and children maybe). His name was Thomas Brooks born in East Schull, Cork Ireland around 1823 and was married to a Mary Jane Sweeney. As I live in Australia I'm looking for somewhere on line where I can find Service Records, passenger lists or Muster Books so that I can fit him into my tree. Can you please help and offer some suggestions?  I've not had much success with WO12 at Kew.
Thanks. Vern

Hi Vern,

Can you tell us anything more about Thomas BROOKS or his wife Mary Jane. Do you know anything about their lives in New Zealand, his civilian occupation or where they lived? Did he or Mary Anne die in Australia?

A look through NZ BDM didn't find any likely death.
https://www.bdmhistoricalrecords.dia.govt.nz/search/

There's no obvious articles in Papers Past relating to him.

I can't see any references on Archway.

Hi,

I am not sure if the following will help Vern in this instance, but I do know that the AJCP includes the Musters etc

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=829521.0

the National Library (of Australia) website includes the following blurb

The Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) is a collection of unique historical material relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific dating from 1560 to 1984.
Records filmed by the AJCP include a diverse range of material from UK Government Departments such as the Admiralty, Home Office, Colonial Office, the Dominions Office held by The National Archives of the UK and County Record Offices as well as personal archives and manuscripts of leading politicians, explorers, scientists, religious and missionary societies, convicts and businesses held by private organisations or individuals.
The project to digitise the content of the AJCP microfilm will be completed by the 30th June 2020. Content is released monthly and a summary is available on the project news page.
Detailed descriptions and digitised images of all records filmed by the AJCP are available through online finding aids. Specific searches on collections, personal, family and organisational names and subjects can also be done through Trove.

I have had a quick look at the AJCP digitisation project, and I can see there are New Zealand records there that could be worth checking out  (1847-1855  :) would include 1852 from our OP's opening post  :) ) ....
