To my knowledge there wasn't a British medal for the Crete campaign. Do you mean the Greek one or the Turkish one perhaps?

Hi Shaun. You could be right; a soldier I'm researching was in Crete April 1897 and returned home Nov 1897 (from newspaper articles) I located his service papers earlier and they confirm he was on the Campaign of Crete 97 and the only mention of a medal was for Long Service & Good Contact.  He also served 12 years in India but no mention of a medal there either.  Did they not present medals for campaigns?

Yes of course they did but Crete was a relatively small affair for the British, and garrison service in India was not in itself a campaign.
