Canal Boatman Ancestors Walker and Pearton
« on: Tuesday 14 July 20 16:42 BST (UK) »
Hi. I’m new here. I am looking for a George Walker born roughly 1851 in the Uk somewhere. He married a Mary Ann Pearton in Paddington 9th December 1872. I can find no record for brothers or sisters and the father is listed and Edward Walker.
Pretty new to this so any help appreciated 😊

Thank you.

Welcome to Rootschat Michelle  :D

You seem to know the marriage details.  Can you tell me what occupation is given for George and his father Edward?  Is there an age for George or just of full age/over 21?

What age was Mary and what is her father's name and occupation?

Any address shown at the time they married?  Who were the witnesses?

This information could assist in locating the couple pre marriage on the 1871 census and will hopefully give you more details to work with.

One son

I think this is going to be a tough nut to crack.  I am struggling to find anything for either George or Mary re census and birth records.

The occupation of boatman suggests a family that moved around the country therefore making it harder to pin them down.  They may well have missed appearing on census records because of that.

I agree GG, I did find a son born, Georgie in 1872, not found any of them after that, but as you mentioned, boat people can be up and down the Grand union  canal,  think nearest to Paddington,  my family   way back were boat people, up and down the canal but mostly came home to Paddington to have the children baptised, 14 of them, just imagine all of those on a canal boat, plus goods , at the moment we have no idea where George and Mary were born

There is an 1898 marriage at St Mary’s  Paddington of Caroline Walker, 24, father George Walker a boatman, deceased.

What about this birth?
