What was the number, a page number?  I put in 1970 on free bmd, put page no as 2431 but none of the births show an s.

So where did this number appear on the birth registration?  Were you looking at the GRO site or another one?

The numbers with an s are shown on the scan of the original index and indicates that the details were amended at a later date and means supplementary copy.
See What is the reason for a page number with a suffix letter S

I wondered if it was something to do with that Stan.  Larkspur didn't indicate that the original index was being looked at.

Numbers with an "s" suffix are also shown on FreeBMD, for example

I did not want to put too many of the details down as the person is still alive and the situation is delicate. It was a made up version of the page number. I did not put the correct one as I knew someone would try and trace it and I certainly did NOT want that. I did think it was to do with the certificate being changed in some way, but wanted to be certain. So many thanks for all the replies.
