Auxiliary Fire Service in WW2
« on: Wednesday 15 July 20 13:43 BST (UK) »
Not sure if I'm on the right forum for this ....
My father Thomas Gleave b.1916 in Manchester volunteered for the Auxiliary Fire Service in WW2.  He had applied for the Army but was turned down because of health concerns.  I'd like to write down for the family any information about what he did in the AFS.  I know he was in the 1940 Manchester Blitz at Christmas time.  I also know he was missing for a while and he was working on Piccadilly when the buildings were collapsing.  He never spoke about it.
Can anyone tell me where I could find any information?
