Yes, there is this engagement notice:

"CAPTAIN E. N. BICKFORD AND MISS PATTERSON
The engagement is announced between Captain Edward Napier Bickford, Royal Engineers, elder son of Brigadier General E. Bickford, C.M.G. and Mrs. E. Bickford of Burton Bradstock, Dorset, and Mary Estill, only daughter of the late R. P. Patterson, of Scarborough."
The Times, Saturday,  Aug. 27, 1938

Modified to add:
Another notice, the same as above but with this additional :
"Brig. General Bickford served on the Burma Expedition, 1885-87, and the Sikkim Expedition of 1888, when he was mentioned in despatches. He was awarded the C.M.G. in 1918 when he retired."
Evening Telegraph , Saturday,  Aug. 27, 1938

Yes, as many military families do.  :)

Meant to add this death notice for Mary earlier:

"BICKFORD - On April 14 1963 at Barrowfield Burton Bradstock, Dorset, MARY LOUISA, aged 93, widow of Brigadier-General EDWARD BICKFORD. Funeral service at St Mary's Church Burton Bradstock on Thursday April 18 at 11 a.m. followed by cremation."
The Daily Telegraph, Monday,  Apr. 15, 1963

As you're in Australia, did you know that you can access British Library Newspapers online through the Australian National Library? Hours of fun trawling through old newspapers! Also Library Edition Ancestry is available for free at the moment too. If you don't have one you can apply for a Library Card here:

Thanks maddys52,
I'd forgotten about the NLA access, I do have a card I got it sometime ago.
Lucky I remembered where I put it. I'll go on a hunt.

Thanks, there are so many places to find information.

Another question -
I have found details of properties that Edward & Mary & Edith lived in, in 1929/30 & 1931.
Red House & The Retreat.
Is there any chance someone might know of where I can find an old map of that time that might have the properties shown on it? Or the Bridport area at that time?

I know that Edith was a school teacher at the Grammar school. would there be any way of finding school records to see when she started teaching there?

Thanks again for everyone's help.
