Is this 1850 census in New York, the census you are referring too?

He is clearly noted as Joseph in the census, yet you refer to him as J.W. Lawson. Is there more information that you have that identifies him as J.W?

In the 1849/50 New York City Directory, there is a Joseph Lawson, a porter, living at 113 Christopher Street.  James N. Cobb is living at 256 Fourth, a commercial merchant whose business is located at 21 South. Joseph is at the same address in the previous directory (1848/1849). There is a Joseph Lawson noted in 1851/52, but he is a butcher. Unlikely he switched trades.

A one-line death notice (amongst many others) of the death of a Joseph Lawson, aged 33 years, on Saturday, February 6, 1852 in the New York Times.

The 1850 Census doesn't give relationshps. It looks like he was a boarder in their home or perhaps worked for James Cobb who seemed to be relatively well-to-do.
