Why register a birth in Canada?

Hi,

I have someone born in Leith, Scotland (supported by a birth registration) who subsequently moved to Canada, where the birth was registered, stating the birth was in Leith.

Why would you do that?

What year are we talking about?  It may have been done for school purposes or the parents were required to register the child for said child to be accepted by the Canadian authorities.

I'll have a look and see if I can find anything regarding that.

This is some of the requirements for modern schooling in Canada

Proof of age, usually in the form of a passport or birth certificate
Proof of your current address. This can include bank statements, utility bills, or housing agreements
Proof of legal guardianship, if the child is under the age of 18 and you are not their parent
Proof of immigration status, including a passport, birth certificate, permanent residence card, Confirmation of Permanent Residence (IMM 5292), or Record of Landing (IMM 1000)
Their up-to-date immunization record.

You don't say how old the person is in your post so this is guesswork.

Birth & registration in Leith - February 1894,

Registration in Newcastle, New Brunswick - May, 1895

Do you have any details of the New Brunswick registration?  Have you seen an image or just a record?

Are you willing to give us a name so that we can have a look?

The person in question was only 14 months old and presumably the parents had the Scottish certificate with them?

The document is for a registration of births for 'Registration Division of Northumberland County', number 002407.
Child name: Isabella Jane (Dob: February 6th 1894)
Father: Thomas Dennis
Mother: Euphemia Taylor

No idea what documents they had with them!

There does not appear to be any birth registered according to Scotland's People website either as Dennis or Denis.  This may be why they were required to register her birth when they got to Canada.

Do you know when they went to Canada?  It may be that they left shortly after she was born and didn't get round to registering her birth in Leith.
