Hi there.

I wonder if anybody can help. I am doing my family tree & have come across a Winifred Cox born 14/11/1897 in Chelsea to a John & Hanna Cox. I have also been told by a family member that she changed her surname to Grant & she also put up a child for adoption also surname Grant , She died 12/6/1965 & according to family she never married. So is there anyway I can find out why she changed her surname & would there be any info on the adoption thanks

Do you have her death certificate?  If so who registered the death?  I assume the below is her death registration

GRANT    WINIFRED    67    Merton    5d   370

Any idea when and where she may have had the child?

Have you located Winifred on the 1939 Register?

Seems also to be registered under Cox
Winifred Cox  aged 67  Merton AMJ 1965
There is a Winifred Cox on the electoral roles but could be a completely different person...

I see that the page no. for the death registration is the same under both names.

Didn't leave a will under either surname.  Might be worth getting the death cert(s) unless hamali already has that.

Cath, how far back do Winifred and Donald go at that address of 142 Wydell Close?

As you say, may be a different person.

Do you have any idea when Winifred's child was born please?

Formal adoption didn't begin in England until 1926 - so if a child was adopted before then, there wouldn't be any formal records.
