Winifred does appear on 1939 war register. Surname fits with "the quick brown *** jumps"

Can't see one with the right birth date which Hamali has said is 14/11/1897 so not sure which one you were looking at John.

Just an observation, in 1901 she is recorded as Winnie and also in later census. She may have used this name on other occasions.

There is a extra date on the record 24.2.49.. would that suggest a later marriage or change of name?

It means on that date her name change to Grant was recorded.
The three letter code at the end will tell you where she was living at the time.
