If ordering a birth cert, I would be going for Clifford Hughes b 1900 Oldham. it fits much more with what you know, and working backwards

I think the Andrew family on Cheshire is a red herring - the Andrew connection is far more likely to be to Clifford snr's wife

Life I think must have been hard. Sarah Hughes (nee Ashworth) never seems to be with her husband. It may be a complete coincidence but there's a Thomas Hughes b Oldham, who is a very similar age to Sarah, on the 1901 census in Dartmoor prison

Sarah’s husband was Thomas so that fits with Louisa’s information.

I agree also re that birth certificate.

It is odd though re the Andrew surname given by the relatives. It is so specific. Unless someone has searched and found that name and assumed it was correct?

There are WW1 Army records for Clifford Hughes and Harold Hughes both of 98 Moorhey Street Oldham with mother Sarah as next of kin. In 1901, the family are at 103 Moorhey Street.

Clifford enlisted into the Lancashire Rifles in 1915 but was discharged because of ‘having made mistatement as to age’  he said he was 19yrs.

Clifford died in 1958 and administration was granted to Ellen. The address was 27 Wren Street so stayed in the same area.

Hi all,
Thank you for your help, yes I agree it is best to go for Clifford and Ellen’s Marriage Certificate.
It is interesting the Dartmoor  Prision as in an old photo album we have a photo of this prision from distance and always wonder why we had that ! I just thought they took because they were on holiday in the area.
Any way,
Thank you  for your support.
