please help name transport
« on: Saturday 18 July 20 12:40 BST (UK) »
Horace Weatherley left Newport Barracks (Royal Artillery) to join 9 Mountain Battery in India.  His service records show what looks like he departed on the ss Delaware but a ship of that name sunk June 1898.  I attach a snip from his records, the ship in question is the top one dated 26 Oct 1898.      It is possible his wife Jenny also travelled with him.  Can someone please help locate the name of the ship they travelled on.
Thanks

Hi Shaun; that's a good possible, any chance you could check passenger list to see if the Weatherley's are on board.

Reading newspaper reports of shipping movements I think it is more likely the troopship Dilwara. It left Southampton for Malta and Bombay on 27 October 1898 so he would most likely have embarked on the 26th.

(Around the same time, the troopship Dunera arrived in Bombay.)

As far as I know, there are no passenger lists for the troopships.

His army records show that Jenny was placed on the married roll on the same date (26 October 1898) and that she was with him in India.
