Are These Samples Written By The Same person?
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 02:18 BST (UK) »
This is probably a wild goose chase and probably almost impossible to solve, but here goes.
I am trying to track the life of Mordecai/Marcus HYMAN c1751-1846.  The signature is from an 1803 Petition from Prisoners in King's bench Prison and the others from Account Books when he was an Apothecary and Surgeon of Chatham and Rochester.
I have taken a smallish sample from 4 papers and hope they aren't too big to attach properly.
Any help would be much appreciated.

My immediate reaction is  -  'No - not the same person' . . .     But . . . .  I am not an expert.

Having said that, those samples are small and we really need to see a little larger to see the same letters recurring to try to match how the writer is forming them.

You are allowed bigger clips than that, and if necessary you could post two then the other two in the following post.

Without seeing bigger snips they look like four different hands to me.  :-\

I agree with the reservations already expressed but I can see some similarities linking the first three. The last one is almost certainly the odd one out, even taking into account that it was written some years later.

Thank you for your replies, not sure if I can get the signature larger, will give it a go, and  add a larger snip from 1813 and 1814. The later one did look quite different so won't add that.

Thanks

First two  examples the same hand. Compare "Box Pills"
The capital "M" very similar in all three.

It is clearer seeing the larger sections of writing -  I think the first two are in the same hand.

Last signature might be different but he may have been writing more carefully if signing on an official document.

The first two do look to be the same writer.  The letter 'M' is similar in all three but the letter 'H' in the signature is significantly different to that in the words Harts Horn in the first scan which make me think it's a different writer.  Even in the person signing their name was doing so carefully would they significantly change the manner in which they formed the letter?
