REME service - sketchy info
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 10:55 BST (UK) »
Morning!  I have the sketchiest of info so far on this particular ancestor (Uncle) and wonder if anyone could either point me in a direction for more (I'm trying to persuade the family to hunt for service papers).

Martin Thomas Loftus b 1921
Was in REME, something to do with radar in the North of England.  There's a record in Forces War for a Martin T Loftus, Craftsman, 1947 No. 2051207 but not keen on paying out for this one record - unless it's last resort.
Family said he was also ROAC
Photo of his medals below, I see the Efficiency Medal is for long service?  Does this mean he was TA throughout the War?

Any points would be great.  I've tried searching his No. on Ancestry, FindMyPast and Fold3 with no luck.

Many thanks
Val

Service records after 1920 are still with the MOD and nowhere else.

The pre-war TA was mobilised at the outbreak of war so while he was still on the books of the TA, he was now a full time soldier.  Time served in wartime counted double towards his twelve years service.

Certain parts of the RAOC (not ROAC) became REME on the latter's formation in 1942.

This for background.  All will be revealed if you follow Rosie's advice.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Great, that helps, thank you re TA and RAOC.  I'm hoping his family will hunt for papers with renewed vigour (waited 3 months already).  Either way we'll get them, I'm just impatient, lol.

Have you checked if his name and service number are engraved on the edges of the medals?

Jebber - you say 'WW2 Medals were NOT engraved with the recipients details.' - I beg to differ - partially! These are my father's medals, the 1939-1945 Star have his details (rank, surname, initials) on the back, the 1939-1945 Defence Medal and the 1939-1945 War Medal have the same around the edge. If you meant his service number then of course you are right - that is not on the medals. Wishful thinking on my part! (Sorry, no image, I couldn't fathom out how to fit it in so the info I referred to was visible)
