Allowing Chrome and MS Edge to connect to RootsChat

With the help of an iPad I can Get this message onto Rootschat. 

Trying to log on with a laptop I am getting.

Your connection isn’t secure. (In bold)

This site uses an outdated security configuration that might expose your personal information when it’s sent to this site ( for example passwords, messages, or credit cards )

NET:ERR_SSL_OBSOLETE_VERSION


On the right is a blue square saying. Go back.

On the left box that says advanced.

The connection used to load this site is TLS 1.0 or TLS 1.1 which are out dated and will be turned off in future. When these are turned off you wont be able to load the site. The server should use TLS 1.2 or later.

In blue writing.

When I try this I can get to the home page but no further.

Can someone please pm this message to Sarah or Tristan. I can’t get to personal message screen.

This topic has been raised numerous times now. We're sorry that it's causing you problems.

We are aware of the issue and undergoing testing to fix the problem.

Unfortunately when the fix is implemented it will cause RootsChat to become unavailable for a period of time.

As with all testing, and for other operability reasons we cannot provide a timetable of when the changeover will begin.

It's not just you, Sandra. Lots of threads about it today. I can use RC as normal with Firefox on desktop but get error message using edge.

I'm sure Rootschat is safe. No-one gives details like credit cards or bank accounts.  My OH had a similar message when he tried to log on to Amazon this morning to download a free book to his Kindle.  I wonder if the browser companies are tightening up on security

I've been having the same problem since yesterday. Using Windows 10 and Microsoft Edge. I'm blaming an update which happened overnight Friday-Saturday.
When I get on here I get the same message each time I try an action, even to move to a new page. If a thread is more than 1 page I have to go through the rigmarole to view another page.
I'll get the message again when I try to post this reply.

Nothing to do with updates, it has been happening for a while.  I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, I was given one of the threads above, to get Rootschat working again on Firefox.

I had the same problem yesterday and I use Google and Chrome and get the same message, when I choose to continue with RootsChat unsafe I could access RootsChat fine. I have had no problems since. I have also had Win10 updates today, but that might just be a coincidence.. As this is a forum and not online purchasing then I don't think it's a problem, but, it is annoying.

For those of you using MS' Edge or Google's Chrome the problem is likely due to new versions (both v84) of the browsers being released recently that have disabled TLS 1.0 by default. As RootsChat is still using TLS 1.0 it results in the browser blocking access to the site.

No doubt RootsChat will be updated in the near future but in the meantime you can re-enable TLS 1.0 in your browsers. It's not ideal, as TLS 1.0 isn't secure, and changing the browser settings will apply to all websites that use TLS 1.0 (which shouldn't be many).

If you do re-enable TLS 1.0, I'd suggest reverting the change once RootsChat switch to a newer version, to avoid any possible security issues.

Changing Edge (desktop) settings:
1) Open a new tab
2) Open the settings by entering the following in the address bar: edge://flags
3) Enter TLS in the search field
4) Locate the "Enforce deprecation of legacy TLS versions" setting
5) Change the setting, in the drop list, from 'Default' to 'Disabled'
6) After changing the setting a 'Restart' button will be displayed, click it to restart the browser for the change to take affect.

After changing the setting you should be able to access RootsChat.

See attached for example of the settings.

Note that there are 2 versions of MS' Edge web browser, the older one is referred to by MS as Edge Legacy (aka EdgeHTML) and the newer one as simply Edge (aka Edge Chromium). MS have been pushing out the newer version via the Windows Update process so most people will likely have it already. The simplest way to tell what version you have is by the logo, if it has the blue 'e', it's the old version and if it has the swirly blue & green logo, it's the new version.

The steps above are for the new version of Edge. If you are still using the old version you can opt to install the new version by downloading it from MS.

Changing Chrome (desktop) settings:
As per changing the settings in Edge but in step 2 enter the following in the address bar: chrome://flags

(Note, I don't have a machine with Chrome installed to test with but as Chrome and Edge (new) use a common code base, it should be very similar).
