Joseph Ross and Matilda (?)
« on: Sunday 19 July 20 20:02 BST (UK) »
Hi all,

I have a record of Joseph Ross marrying Matilda in Glendermott in July 1843 but it says Matilda’s surname is illegible, as is her fathers.

I’m trying to ascertain if anyone has access to this marriage record to see if her surname can be made out. I’m hoping to check if it is a Matilda McFarland (I’m trying to ascertain if it’s the same Matilda who had a child, Mary Ross, with her husband Joseph in 1848 in Ballyowen).

Thanks in advance!

Where did you get the record and which church did the marriage take place in?

Hi,

Thanks for replying so quickly. It’s actually a transcript, which I got online from roots Ireland website. It doesn’t mention the church, only that Joseph was CoI. The transcript looks half finished, so I am not sure if the actual record was in bad condition or if the transcription was not finished by RI. My thinking is, without the church, there may not be any way to find this, would there? ???

If there was a record, no matter how illegible part were, surely they would give the church  :-\ 1843 is, unfortunately, just before civil registration. Roots Ireland, is, I think, the transcription site which assigns a religion to bride and groom for civil marriages even though the actual record doesn't indicate religion of anything except where marriage took place  ::)

PRONI's Guide to Church Records is good at showing what records they have microfilmed. Glendermott COI do have early records so certainly a possibility- Baptisms, 1810-1900; marriages, 1808-1900; burials, 1828-94.

Thanks Aghadowey.

I wonder if it is worthwhile me contacting Roots Ireland, to check about the transcript also. I will have a look at PRONI to see what’s been microfilmed. If it is the same Matilda I’m thinking of, it’s quite likely they were Presbyterian.

I will see if I can find someone to check the records if they do happen to be there. Fingers crossed  :)

PRONI has been closed for the last few months and when they do open the Reading Room it will be by appointment.

Thought I'd posted link to PRONI's Guide to Church Records but it doesn't seem to be there- probably gremlins  ;)
