Do you have the birth certificate for your grandfather as that should give details regarding his fathers occupation.

You may also need the 2nd marriage certificate to establish whether Violet was widowed or divorced though she could omit to tell the truth about herself on this.

Census information is Crown Copyright, from www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

Hi Girl Guide, what was Donald Jnr's occupation at the time of his 1916 marriage?

Sailor
Private, Lovat Scouts

The Lovat Scouts was a British Army unit first formed during the Second Boer War as a Scottish Highland yeomanry regiment of the British Army. They were the first known military unit to wear a ghillie suit and in 1916 formally became the British Army's first sniper unit, then known as "sharpshooters".

Thanks, Girl Guide  :)

There are these entries for a Donald McKinnon born c. 1887 in Skye

1911 - www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XWRT-K3P
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V5CL-JBY

Haven't yet been able to link it up to anything though.

There is also a Kate McKinnon born in Skye with a son Donald born in Glasgow c. 1890 in the 1891 and 1901 census. No sign of a Donald Snr.

They married in Perth (Scotland) in 1916.
The marriage certificate would give you plenty of information.

Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk & turn up the marriage.  It is a pay per view website so you will need to buy credits to download a copy of the marriage cert

It will give you both sets of parents names plus mothers maiden names.

As Violet was born 1896 - presume Donald was a similar age or older.  There are 21 birth entries for his name between1892-1896 but once you have his parents names - you can look for him on the 1901 & 1911 Scottish census to find all the other info you want - siblings etc

When Violet remarried - was she a widow?
