Joseph Newton born 1785 in Leicester Militia Regiment
« on: Monday 20 July 20 16:45 BST (UK) »
Joseph was born in Leicester St Mary (de Castro) on 29th November 1785. He enlisted in the Leicester Reg of Militia on 11.3.1803 at the age of 17 age for life and served 11 years 137 days as a drummer or a trumpeter. He then served 14 years 333 days as a corporal before being discharged on 26th June 1829 due to reduction in the regiment, I think.

I believe he returned to Leicester St Mary and worked as a framework knitter until he died in September 1939. Can't decide if he was married or not.

It looks like he was a chelsea pensioner with 14and eleven twelfths service under C and 11 and five twelfths under D equalling 26 and 4 twelfths less 1 year underage service

On the record card there is a large number 5 written but I can't decipher the rest and wondered if anyone could help me put this record into some sort of sensible order please.

Any help will be most gratefully received. Thanks in advance
June

Hi ShaunJ, Thanks for posting that image, I couldn't manage to do it. Yes. most of the family were framework knitters, it's the bit underneath thart I can't decipher. It looks like something fair. I was interested in finding out what it was but can't manage to see it clearely even when enlarged.

Thanks for the reply,
kind regards,
June
