great great grandparents
« on: Tuesday 21 July 20 09:48 BST (UK) »
Hello.. Trying to complete small tree for my wife's auntie and have hit a wall... Not sure if it is due to both sets of great great grandparents being members of the Free Church...

First set marriage I have as before 1844 based upon their children being 30 when they married in 1874...
Donald Grant and Ann McKenzie Marriage <1843/1844...
Farquhar McRae and Catherine Fraser Marriage  <1843/1844..
Their Roderick Grant (Dundee) and Isobel McRae (Brechin) Married in 1874 Dundee ...Free Church

The other set being before 1866/1871 again based on children's ages..
Simon McGillivray and Ann Grant Marriage <1865/1866...
William Carrie and Jane Young Marriage < 1870/1871...
Their Donald McGillivray (Dundee)  and Jane Barty Carrie (Dundee) Married in 1891 Dundee ...Free Church ages 25 and 20

Any help appreciated ....
Regards
Mark W

Religious denomination would not have anything to do with it after 1855, when statutory civil registration began.

Roderick Grant, aged 38, married, born Shieldaig of Applecross, was an attendant in the Royal Lunatic Asylum in Dundee according to the 1881 census (transcription).

Isabella Grant, 35, married, born Ullapool, was at 53 1/2 Caldrum Street, Dundee, with daughter Ann, 2, born Dundee.

Ullapool is in the parish of Lochbroom BTW.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

As Ann McKenzie or Grant and Catherine Fraser or McRae were both still living in 1874, there will be death certificates for both that should tell you the names of their parents.

Their husbands my have died between 1855 and 1874, in which case there would also be death certificates that should tell you the names of their parents.

All available at modest cost at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
