I wondered where you got Richards as Marys maiden name from?

John c 1839 should have a GRO Birth Reg with Mothers mn Richards but I cant find one.

I keep coming back to the possibility that Mary was Widowed but Marriage does not say status.

(I can back this up but may be incorrect)

Wivenhoe, Trish and Rosie,

Yes, this is my family.

The Martin family, which is my mother's line, is quite a complex one. (as both my mother's and father's line are both Martin !!!!)

My maternal grandfather John Alfred Martin born 1861 in Frindsbury, Strood, Kent..... was the  illegitimate son of Lucy Martin b1833-1895 (she changed his name from Martin to Jones when he was 10 years old).

William Martin b1805-186, Cowden, Kent and Mary Richards b1804 Chalfont, Bucks, were the parents of my great grandmother Lucy b1833.

If you have access to Ancestry.co.uk then my family tree is a public tree.  Would that be of help ?

It's called MARTIN and LINES family tree.

I'm not sure if its correct or not.

Does anyone have a Birth Cert of JOHN Martin c 1839?

Also the 1832 Marriage does not show marital status ie single.widowed.

The actual parish record might.

I can find a Mary TURNER/James RICHARDS Marriage 16 Dec 1827 South Bersted
They seem to Baptise a FRANK JAMES 30 Nov 1828 abode Bognor, Father a Carpenter
There is a Burial for James 04 Aug 1828 age 23, abode Bognor

So Frank James would have been born after James died.

Could Frank James that be the James Richards age 12 on 1841 Census?

There is also this speculative birth reg.

MARTIN,  - (male) mmn TURNER
GRO Reference: 1839  M Quarter in MAIDSTONE  Volume 05  Page 288

All the info I have found is on FreeREG

As I say this is just a scenario and without info from 1832 Marriage and a possible birth cert for John 1839 this is all just a theory.

Wivenhoe definitely has the correct family.

As for the birth certificate of John Martin Trish, I have never sent away for that, as my interests were more for his sister, my great grandmother Lucy MARTIN 1833.....then of course her mother, the extremely elusive Mary Richards 1804.

My goodness, why do I have to have such a complex family tree ! LOL

Any more ideas come to mind ?

Or does anyone else have any ideas ?

When this Covid settles down maybe someone can look at the parish record for that 1832 Marriage.

Too far for me I'm in Australia :)

I have looked in Bucks and Surrey for her with no luck so far.

I have the Marriage as ;
15 Oct 1832, St Mary Magdalene, South Bersted, Sussex
William MARTIN to Mary RICHARDS
Witnesses, Charles HAMMOND/Charlotte CAPLIN

Image shows banns were called 9, 16, 23 Oct 1831 - They were both of the parish.  Front cover of register states 'Banns of Marriage published in the Parish Church of Subdeanery, Chichester in the County of Sussex.  Also indexed as St Peter the Great, Chichester
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DY49-Q6V?i=315

The marriage does not appear to have taken place at that church, the marriage images are earlier on that same film for around that date
