Census schedule number and house numbers
« on: Thursday 23 July 20 16:32 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
Does anyone know if there is a way of identifying  a house number to the schedule numbers on the censuses. Even on the 1911 census the occupiers in the road never entered any of the house numbers. My friend is trying to find who lived in their house from 1871 onwards, I found the occupants on the 1939 Register, but that is all.
I can't think of any way of doing this
Many thanks

The houses all have names, do they?

Is it possible to find a house on the road which still has the name somewhere on it - often in a stone above the door, or possibly on a gatepost - and work from that?

Thanks thats an Idea, I will ask my friend to have a look along the road to see if there are any names of houses or any other clues, he said they live opposite the Old School House, but that wasn't listed when I was looking through the censuses I don't recall seeing house names, I didn't look at all the censuses, so when I hear back from them I'll search the census returns again.
Thanks again for the thought

If you know the address in 1939, you could use old maps to see where it was in relation to known places and try to find it from the enumerators description of his route in the census.

Hi Stan
Good thinking, I never thought of that, I haven't used maps much in the past but it will give me something to do when it's raining over the week end, I believe there are good  maps on a Scottish website isn't there, I will have to investigate.
Thanks

Beware! I really thought I'd located a house that some of my ancestors used to live in, worked via counting from "Google Earth" one I could see the number of.... but I was informed by someone who actually knew the area that the houses had been re-numbered at least twice over the time since my mob had lived there! Hope you have better fortune in your search.

O golly thats a bit of a blow, they may have to do some searching there, I will bear that in mind and pass it on to them, I wonder if  their County Records Office have records of house number changes over the centuries, it may worth them having a phone call to them when life gets back to normal
Thanks for the warning

Houses often only had names, I know of several examples where that is still the case.

I grew up in a house with no number, my parents got the Council to number it.

Renumbering has always been a problem. I lived in a house numbered 28 for two years, during that time it was changed to number 4.
