Names on document
« on: Friday 24 July 20 13:34 BST (UK) »
Not sure if I'm posting in the correct bit but I'm trying to work out why two names are listed on a workhouse paper.

Under names and ages of Pauper and Family Chargeable it lists two names Hillda Bailey (actually Baitey)  18 years then a different name underneath, but I am not aware of any other family members and no one else in mentioned on the document other than Hilda.

I wondered if anyone had any ideas who it could be.

Many Thanks

Could she also have been known by the name of Clara Baley?

I can't find any birth registration for a Hilda Baitey around 1892, Bailey but not Baitey.

Do you have any other information regarding Hilda?  Is the name with one l or two? Hilda/Hillda?

There's also settlement papers from 1910 for a Gwendoline Elder Bailey b c1892. Her Dr Barnardos history and some of the names she mentions are the same as Hilda Bailey (who potentially turns up again in the workhouse in 1920 as Hilda G Bailey)

The important thing to note is born Jamaica - thinks she came to the UK when about 3 or 4

Added: Gwendoline H Baitey turns up again in Hackney in 1923

Her name on my Fathers birth certificate is Hilda Gwendoline Baitey but no records exist apart from the workhouse ones. I wondered if for some reason they thought or maybe she was also Clara Batey who is mentioned in black history month in Banardo's as that girl started in Doncaster workhouse the same as Hilda.
