W J Sewell is a bookseller by 1901: RG13/140/143/3. (Indexed H T Sewell on some sites).

Annie Sewell married Thomas Murray (18, newspaper seller) at St Paul’s, Clerkenwell, 13 June 1897. Father: William Sewell, bookseller.

She may have reverted to using the name Ann Sewell by 1911 - not sure whether you have looked at her mother’s entry in that census.

Another mention of Annie

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=485598.msg6591224#msg6591224

I still can't believe that Annie Sewell was the same Annie Sewell who was married to Thomas Murray (as I said before the two Annies might well have been sisters). My aunt told me that there were two Annies (sisters of my grandmother) My aunt remembered visiting Annie in the mental home and remembered the other Annie as well. It just doesn't make any sense that Annie would have had an affair with Frederick Clare then been so devastated when her husband Thomas died that she "lost her mind" and was admitted to a mental hospital where she spent the rest of her life.My aunt passed away last year, so I can't ask her anymore.

Oh I should have remembered we’ve done all this before. I even did a huge chronology on that old thread.

Thanks rosie99.

This was a complicated family. William James Sewell had two children with his first wife who died quite young in childbirth. The eldest of these two children was Called Annie although there are variations of this. (Annie Martha - Mary Ann - Mary Martha Ann) however she married Frederick Buckthorpe in 1889.  - Annie born 1878  married Thomas Murray in 1897 so she wouldn't have been on the 1901 census with her parents. But - there is an Annie born either 1881 or 1887 according to the birth years given.  (for Annie and Sarah).although I believe that Sarah was the one born in 1887 because I  always knew that she wasn't much younger than my grandmother (Harriet who was born in 1889) so what happened to the youngest Annie. Perhaps I should forget all about her. maybe she died.  The Annie on the 1911 census with her mother is the one who was married to Thomas Murray, he was with his parents. This Annie was the one who ended up in a mental hospital, although the story that myself and my cousins were told that her husband had gone down with the Titanic has proved to be untrue. So no idea why we were all told that story.

Dear Betty,
Hope you are well. I am also looking for someone with the surname Sewell (either Annie or Eliza) who married an Alfred Charles Rose. I think they were my great-grandparents. I wonder if it is the same couple you are searching for?
Kind regards,
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Do you have a year of birth for Annie/Eliza? and who were her parents? I do have an Annie who married a Thomas Murray and another Annie (her sister) who I have never managed to find anything about, I have wondered whether she had another name but just called herself Annie.
