My ancestor incorrectly added to an Ancestry tree
« on: Saturday 25 July 20 16:01 BST (UK) »
I would welcome some advice as how do proceed with this query please.

I have contacted the owner of the tree and asked him to remove my ancestors and the reply was that he has a person of that name in his family and won't delete it.

My ancestor never married and yet she is the wife of his ancestor and three generations of my family are included on his tree.

His ancestor supposedly died in 1908 whereas mine did not die until 1936.

I have her death certificate and the grave details where she is buried with her parents and four siblings. He has included this information on his tree.

I need proof but cannot find his relative on any census or death records.

Any advice please,

Poirot

I am afraid that you will just have to ignore what the other person has added to their tree, this sort of thing is common on those online trees.

You could post a link to his tree and tell us who the rogue ancestor is, we might be able to sort it out.

Another idea - and I have done this, myself - add a comment to the entry/ies concerned, giving the correct details, preferably with corroboration.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Yes. i was just about to suggest this. I believe if you add such a note \ comment the tree holder cannot delete it (if i am wrong someone please say, thank you).
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

I added a comment to a tree a few years ago that married my father off when he was 8 years old (to the wrong person). The note is still there and they have done nothing about it and they have been on the website very recently.

I add comments to incorrect trees, I hope other searchers take the trouble to look when comments are flagged up against a name. It gives them the opportunity to verify it for themselves.

Sometimes the tree owners spot the comments and correct the information, others just ignore it.

Thank you all for your replies.

William Henry Daniels 1885- 1950 Montreal married Marie Hill Sept 1908 by banns. His parents given as William Daniels and his late wife Mary Jane Littlejohn.

My Mary Jane Liitlejohn was the daughter of Charles Littlejohn & Maria Lynch 1860 - 1936.

She never married and the family had moved to Detroit and all six members are buried in Mount Olivet cemetery.

Hope this helps

Poirot

When his Mary Jane died she would be Daniels not Littlejohn.

Remember though that some people just put information up until they can verify it or they do a bit and leave.  It might be annoying but I suppose that's how it works that people can add from any tree to their own even if information wrong.
