The "Chelsea Pensioner" term is here a bit misleading.  As ShaunJ says, he bought himself out after 3 months.  The document from which the record comes, WO 97 at the National Archives, has the title "Royal Hospital Chelsea, soldiers' documents - discharge papers" and would include papers for both those receiving a pension and for those, such as this man, who didn't.  5 months service with a discharge by purchase does not earn a pension.

The medal award roll for the man who served in the Rifle Brigade first and then the Labour Corps gives his name as John Park Linn.  There is only one medal card for him which only shows the middle initial.   The middle name on the roll would strongly suggest he is the same man.

Bit of guess work.

His Labour Corps number was allocated in Egypt in Sep 1917 approx.  There were some battalions of the Rifle Brigade made up of national reservists sent overseas in 1916 for garrison duties, two of which remained in Egypt.  His medal awards indicate that he served overseas and that he didn't go until after the end of 1915.  Transfer to the Labour Corps in Egypt.  A possible scenario, hard to prove/disprove without  other evidence.

Thanks gents. I am happy this is my great grandfather's cousin despite the limited information and service. I really appreciate the likely information gleamed from his brief medal card and service number.   Very much appreciated.
