Donnelly connections
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 10:07 BST (UK) »
This is my first post, so not sure of what to expect.

I am trying to research my maternal Grandmother's family history. I have recently received a copy of her Father's birth certificate, which states his date and place of birth as: 11/01/1878 at Taylors Row, Golden Cup, Lower Darwen.

His name was Daniel Donnelly and his parents were John Donnelly and Mary Donnelly nee Trainor.

For the life of me, I cannot seem to find anything on either John or Mary before an 1861 census, which places the young married couple in Wolsingham, Durham. At this time, they were respectively 24 and 18 years old, and had yet to have children.

Both John and Mary were born in Ireland. I know that their son (my Great Grandfather), Daniel was most definitely Roman Catholic, as my maternal Grandmother was cast out by her parents when she married my Grandfather (Protestant).

I have been unsuccessful in finding proof of the marriage between them, or how and when they travelled from Ireland.

Following a quick 'Google', I see that The Golden Cup is a bar in Darwen.  Would his have been accommodation back in the late 1800s?

ANY help or information would be most gratefully received.

No connection to Liverpool from census info and that Mary Winstanley/Traynor was previously married

Don’t think it can be the same couple as Mary was only born 1843/44 and was having Donnelly children in 1863

Oh my Goodness! I can see some similarities with the information I have gathered!! I'm rather new to all this, but I can see from the 1881 census that an Elizabeth Curran has neices living with her, next door to the Donnellys. This could well be Mary's sister.

Thank you so very much for all your obvious hard work in helping me shed some light

It's been a while since my last post, and I'm frustratingly no nearer finding anything out about Mary and John.  In reply to the previous post, dated 30th July 2020, I think Elizabeth could well be Mary's sister, as in the 1871 census John and Mary appear to have an Elizabeth Trainor, aged 22, as a servant.
