« on: Sunday 26 July 20 12:48 BST (UK) »
I have found the following information on Family Search website but don't know where to find more information (if there is any!) particularly a first name.  It is an extremely long shot that this is an ancestor but without the first name I'm stumped.

UK Merchant Navy Seamen Records 1835-1941
Name:   Trainer
Event Type:   Military Service
Event Year Range:   1853-1857
Event Place:   United Kingdom
Birthplace:   Down
Birth Year:   1835

Thank you.

Traynor - Ireland, Hull, Kent
Taylor - Kent

FindMyPast doesn't seem to have that one in the merchant navy dataset. It does have an army record for a Patrick Trainer born around 1835 in "Morn", near Downpatrick if that's any help.

Thank you both.
Seaweed - I did see a Thomas Trainer b1835 on Find My Past.  Place of birth was Louth, which I know is not far from County Down.
ShaunJ - appreciate your looking.  Definitely Merchant Navy, not Army.
Ideally to fit in with my family I would love this to be Francis Trainer but better to rule him out now if it's not!

Just realised that these service dates (1853-1857) cover the main part of the Crimean War.  I have no knowledge of naval history but assume the Merchant Navy would have been involved.  Would there have been conscription then?

Rootschatter crimea54 is the person to speak to. That said I have not seen a post from him/her recently. If there is no reply to your message, try a PM.
As far as I am aware Merchant seamen were not conscripted for the period of the Crimean War.

There are a few Trainer(variations)  b. places in Co Down. What first names are you particularly interested in?

PS one of the entries for Thomas, looks more like James to me.

Hi Gadget - it's complicated! Ideally I would like to find info on my g/g/g.father Francis Traynor, b.c 1836.  All I know about him prior to his marriage in Hull in 1866 is that his father's name was Bernard (dec'd by 1866).  I don't know when he came to England.  Francis' son - William Bernard, my g/g.father - always said his Francis was from Monaghan & I have found a couple of baptisms/births around the right date in Monaghan with a father Bernard, but nothing I could substantiate.  However, one small note in one version of WB's own story, states that Francis had been a Merchant Seaman, although all other references & census have him as a flax dresser.  Also, although the majority of census have Francis' place of birth just listed as Ireland, on one it is down as Belfast.  Therefore when I came across the Family Search info, it reminded me of the Merchant Navy reference that I had hitherto ignored.  I am clutching at straws here I know but have been banging my head on this brick wall for so long that any new possibility is worth pursuing.

That is probably much more than you wanted to know, but appreciate your interest! :)
