KENNARD Serjeant in 65th Foot?
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 13:13 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone can shed any more light on Edwin/Edward Kennard b.c.1804. On his son's marriage certificate his occupation is 'colour sergeant' and I'm trying to establish if the Edwin John Kennard, discharged aged 35 and collected a Chelsea pension is the same person. The dates seem to fit but I need more than that to prove the link. Any info you can shed on this would be helpful. (There's no chance I can get to Kew right now and look for myself, I live too far away!)
Thanks.

Served Jun 1824 to Oct 1839.  Born St Pancras -  overseas 1829-1838, said he was 20 years of age in Jun 1824.  Reached the rank of sergeant in Nov 1828 but not colour sergeant.

Does that help?

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Thank you rosie99.
MaxD, that is a bit more info, thank you. To be honest I don't know the difference between sergeant and colour sergeant!

Colour sergeant would be the next step up the promotion ladder, his promotions are clear on his record and end at sergeant.

On the "son's marriage certificate" what is the father's name -  Edwin? Edward? or is it difficult to read?

Thanks MaxD. He died when the son was a child so I guess by the time he got married he could have exaggerated or got it wrong. The daughter's marriage certificate, if I have the right one, says 'officer in the army'.

hanes teulu – it says Edward. The names seem interchangeable in the census. I'm intrigued, why do you ask?

The army service record for Edwin John Kennard includes the date 12 May 1804. His trade was "Trunk Maker"

FindMyPast has the baptism (transcript/image) of -
Edwin John Kennaird, born 12 May 1804, baptised 29 Oct 1807, place St Paul, Covent Garden, parents George and Sarah.

What's the source of the "b.c 1804" for the "Edwin/Edward" mentioned in post#1?

Hi hana teulu,
Sorry it's taken me a while to reply. Thank for the added information about him being a trunk maker.

I have census record from 1841 in St Andrew Holborn (Above the bars), Middlesex. He's 35, living with Ann Kinnaird (b.Ireland) age 20, Emma Kinnaird age 21months and Sarah Woolcomb, age 14 a female servant. No trace of their marriage.
