1. Edwin John Kennaird, born 12 May 1804, bap 29 Oct 1807, Covent Garden
2. Edwin John Kennard attested 5 June 1824, aged 20 (born c. 1804), born St. Pancras. One of the pages of his army record is endorsed "12 May 1804, long face" - date of birth and physical description?
3. Edwin Kennard, 1841 Census, age 35 (born 1802-1806 - ages rounded in'41), Holborn.

An Edward John Kennard died Holborn, Jun Qtr 1841, vol 2 page 77. Can find entry on FindMyPast and FreeBMD but unable to find on GRO to confirm age at death.

The 12 May 1804 date provides a strong link between Covent Garden birth and attestation. You mention "the names (Edwin/Edward) seem interchangeable in the Census" - do you have Edward/Edwin after 1841?

Who was the 'son' - when/where born?

As has been stated, Edward John Kennard died 24/6/1841 Holborn (where family were in 1841 census) so son could only have been born 1841/early 1842. (death entry on GRO index states aged 37).

I was wondering about the son. Hoped to find birth registration to determine Ann Kennard's maiden name.
Re. GRO index, I drew a blank finding an entry for the Edward John Kennard I'd spotted on FindMyPast and FreeBMD, under exact name or variations. Retried after seeing your response but still drew a blank. So, logged out of GRO and logged back in immediately. Lo and behold the GRO now delivered a result under exact search. Must try harder!

Amazing bit of research hanes teulu, thank you.
Annette7, I'm beginning to think that Edwin isn't Edward's biological father. Edwin and Ann have Emma in 1840, listed together in 1841 census. I've just found the record for Ann in the workhouse with new born Edward, Oct 1848. Edward takes the surname but I can't find any record where his father is named.
Emma and Edward are together in 1851 listed as visitors, with a couple who go on to adopt Edward by 1861.
It's a bit of a mystery...

FindMyPast has transcribed surname as Kennon - with Henry and Rebecca Knowles in '51?

Is Edward the Edward Cannard, registered Dec Qtr 1848, Marylebone, vol 1 page 232 - no mother's maiden name recorded on GRO?

Hi hana teulu,

Yes, to both. It has taken me a long time to discover this because ancestry transcribed it as 'Herman'.

No evidence of a baptism. I'm wondering if he had a Roman Catholic baptism as his mother was Irish?? Just an idea.
