When she was in the workhouse 2 months earlier that record said 3 months ago at Little Baddow left after 2 months.

Which left a month but obviously not if she then spent 9 months at Penzance Place.

As you say I maybe better waiting for Barnardo's to open up the archives.

Comparing with the date at the top (if it is 1910 ?), it could well be a 9.

Good point. I hadn't compared that. What's the month, by the way?! August?

Yes, checking the examinations either side, it is August. Very short g in the middle.

I still keep looking at the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" bit and wondering what on earth that has to do with anything!  :)

I agree it looks odd, but you have to remember that we only get the answers in settlement examinations, not the questions.

Perhaps at Shoreditch she was asked how old she was when something-or-other happened, and she didn't know. So instead she was asked if she remembered this acting event, to help determine her age at the time? It may be referenced in her file from Barnardo's. Just guesswork.

I wondered if they are trying to catch her out because they suspected she was Clara and not Hilda.
