Am I reading this right
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 18:39 BST (UK) »
Iiford - there 3 or 4 years - then to a situation at Little Baddow near Chelmesford 5 months then to Mr Richardson 12 Penzance Place a Scullion 9 months.

The reason I ask is the Little baddow was 5 months before this was written so she couldnt be with Mr Richardson for 9 months.

I just wondered if I'm reading or interpreting it correctly.

Richards 12 Penzance Place a Shelter [...]

I think the last word has been cut off?

The clip in the earlier thread is better:

As BB suggests, it could be shelter. The next word looks like it starts with a "g". The handwriting in all the clips is a bit wild in places, but I think a "9" would have been written higher, if you see what I mean.

I still can't think what the word might be, though...

Have you considered using the Barnardo's Family History Service to access the full records?

Yes I have been in contact with them but ut will be some months before they can access records. I found the 12 Penzance Place at Notting hill I was just trying to work out what it said after what I now know is shelter because i thought it looked like 9 months but as Karen said it could be a g not 9.

One little comment:

We were assuming it was Little Baddow near Chelmsford 5 months. I have been unhappy about "months" and having looked again, I am wondering whether it is in fact onwards, i.e. from the age of 5 onwards.

Still doesn't help us with the word after "shelter".

I did wonder whether it refers to another item in the list, i.e. something in addition to the box & bible.

I still keep looking at the "Uncle Tom's Cabin" bit and wondering what on earth that has to do with anything!  :)

Comparing with the date at the top (if it is 1910 ?), it could well be a 9.

To me it looks like 5 months at Little Baddow and 9 mnths at the Shelter.

How sure are you about the dates for Little Baddow? That's why I suggested you get the full records, in due course.

ADDED - if she was in a 'situation' at Little Baddow I think she would be of working age (13/14 or above).
