This website might be worth looking at.  Not sure when it was first started, can't see any dates.

Hi Beccie

Welcome to RootsChat from me  :)

Have you considered this possible marriage for Raymond, your Edmund's father:

Clara L Bailey and Joseph M Vella
2nd Qrt 1928 Southampton Hampshire
Vol 2c /pg 189

Clara Louisa Bailey was born in 1908 in Southampton and died there in 1986. They had a son Raymond Edward Vella in Southampton in 1928 (vol 2c/ pg103) who died in 1997. No other children show for them on the birth index I think. Mother and son show on the 1939 register.

If Raymond Snr did also go by his middle name of Joseph, wondering if he divorced Clara? There is another marriage in Southampton for a Josef Vella in 1940. Two children from this marriage. Possible death, Joseph Vella 1982, Southampton Vol 20/ pg 1347. This Joseph was born on 16 March 1910.

Of course, this could just be a big co incidence but it was the name of the son born in 1928 that caught my eye as a possible connection.

I've tried the electoral register in 1935 &36 for the address given on the workhouse entry. Nothing that appears to link
