Yes Brunswick Gardens, Kensington is still in existence - in the Notting Hill area - but isn’t near Regent St, so I am baffled by the way the address put on the marriage certificate. These people are a nightmare!

According to this site, Brunswick Gardens in Kensington was developed from the mid-1850s onwards, so can’t be the abode of James Sullivan on his 1853 marriage:

(Also I imagine he was somewhere rather less posh!).

Thank you jonw65. Brunswick Place looks a good bet. As luck would have it the 1851 enumeration omits number 3 (!). It goes 11, 10, 9, 6, 8, 7, 5, 4, 2, 1 before reverting to 91 Regent St.

No Sullivans there, anyway, but I am glad to have found the spot.

Well Placed indeed, been looking for possible Rebecca's in 1841 but no luck.

Do we know where Harriet was in 1841 to see if they were together or living close by?
She was married by then but can't find her either.

Harriet Haynes was in service to Viscount Hood in the 1841 census: HO107/679 Book 4; Folio 34; Page 20.

William Haynes may be the "30" yr old male servant b Middlesex who was in service to Viscount Haddo in Argyle St, Westminster.

They had had one (known) child by this stage - George William Haynes baptised 15 March 1840 at St Margaret's, Westminster, son of William (a porter) and Harriet, of 9 Lower Garden St. He is untraced after his baptism. Birth reg is Mar qtr 1840 Lambeth with mmn Elbro.

For completeness, Sophia Bentley, who had been widowed in 1839, was a laundress in Lower Garden St, Westminster in 1841 with Emma Bentley 5, Chas Bentley 10, Wm Bentley 5. There's nobody matching Rebecca's description in the vicinity.

Sophia's daughter Harriet Bentley (b 1823 Wimbledon - later Harriet Gibbons who witnessed Rebecca's marriage to James Sullivan) is in service in Rupell St, Bloomsbury in 1841, but Rebecca isn't with her either.

I think this one is going to have to go on the “too hard” pile for now, but since you’ve all been kind enough to spend time on it I thought I’d update following receipt of Rebecca’s death certificate PDF.

Rebecca Sullivan, 53, wife of James Sullivan, bricklayer’s labourer, died on 19 October 1868 at 31 Lower Garden St, Westminster, of uterine cancer (9 months). Death registered on 20 October.

Informant: James Sullivan, present at the death, 31 Lower Garden St, Westminster.

This gives me new information about James Sullivan: his occupation, and the fact that the marriage endured. His absence from home in the 1861 census wasn’t permanent. However, he is no longer at 31 Lower Garden St in 1871, when Sophia Bentley is at the address on her own.

Incidentally, I also have a new DNA connection to a descendant of Rizpah Holtom - a new half 5th cousin :D
