Shoemaking in Shropshire
« on: Sunday 26 July 20 22:45 BST (UK) »
I have an ancestor who was a shoemaker in Treflach, a small village near Oswestry, in 1851.

I'm guessing it was a cottage industry at the time but if anyone can point me to resources about 19th Century shoemaking, particularly in Shropshire, I'd be grateful.

Thank you

Hi Mike

I also had shoemaker/cordwainer ancestors in Shropshire (St Martins and Wem).  I think every village had at least  one.  This board has quite a few threads on the occupation.  Here's one thread:

Thanks Gadget, I'll do a search on existing threads.

As you know, this is on my dad's side of the family. One of my mum's family lines also leads back to Shropshire so I have shoemakers in Ludlow too. Far enough away from Oswestry for them not to be competitors, though!
