Help with George Latham Seddon's death date
« on: Monday 27 July 20 14:59 BST (UK) »
Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help find out when George Latham Seddon died as I think he died in 1852 but can't find a GRO death index so that I can get a death certificate.

He was born in baptised on 16 April 1811 in Liverpool - son of George and Mary Seddon.
Married Maria Dawson on 28 Nov 1831 in Liverpool.
I couldn't find the 1841 census entry on Ancestry but found it on Findmypast and he's listed as a maker. I can't find him on the 1851 census but his wife is listed as being married and not a widow.

I found some Index to death duty information on FindMyPast saying that he died in 1852 but can't find a death certificate.
I ordered the certificate for George Seddon who died in 1851 in Runcorn and it isn't him.
Maria Dawson's death certificate says that George's profession was a watchmaker journeyman.

The Index to Death duty form seems to be at Canterbury Prerogrative Court. Does that mean he died in Canterbury?

I'd really appreciate any help.
Many thanks
Louise

I wonder if he is one of these two?

Deaths Dec 1855
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   _7
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   2__

As you can see the page numbers are incomplete which probably means they were difficult to read.  GRO hasn't got these two at all.

Thanks Girl Guide
I think he must have died before that though as the death index duties thing is from 1852 and says that he died in 1852.
That's why I ordered the 1851 death certificate for George Seddon in Runcorn but it's not him.
Would there be any reason why it says Canterbury?

Many thanks for helping
Louise

Hi Louisa Maud
George Seddon was born in 1811 so if he died in 1852 he would have been about 41 I believe.
Thanks for looking. Where are you finding these additional deaths?
I've looked on FindMyPast and Ancestry and Freebmd but am not coming up with those.
Many thanks
Louise

She probably got them from the GRO for the ages, free bmd has:-

Deaths Dec 1855
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   _7
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   2__
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   85
Seddon    George        Liverpool    8b   207

Not sure whether we are looking at four separate deaths or the top two have been deciphered as being the bottom two.  The original image only shows two.

Yes, on double checking I am wrong, not to proud or big to admit it, sorry

So, I found these on

www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp

gives maiden names of children and ages at death, a very useful tool, easy to follow, careful you don't purchase a cert!!!

Give it a try with a child who you already know the mother's maiden name

This page from TNA may help explain death duties
https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/death-duties-1796-1903/

I did wonder as his wife was described as an annuitant on the 1851 census whether he was already dead.

I see that this record shows a list of people who died intestate so he hadn't made a will.  That doesn't explain why his death record is not showing up.

I have not yet succeeded in finding any burial record for him.
