James Gordon
« on: Monday 27 July 20 17:22 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find an obituary or burial place of James Gordon, founder of the firm of Primrose and Gordon, solicitors, Dumfries. I understand that he also served as Provost , He apparently died as did his wife before his daughter Margaret married Thomas McKie in 1894. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated

Have you established his exact year of death using Scotlands People?
www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

You haven’t given any details of his birthyear so have you found him on a census entry?

Have no information on James Gordon other than he was the father of Margaret Gordon who married Thomas McKie in 1894. Thomas was sixty-four at the time of his marriage and Margaret was 50. The brides parents were given as James Gordon, Solicitor, (decd) and Mary Gordon Nee Brocklebank (decd)

There would certainly have been an obituary in the local paper of the time. These are held on microfilm in the Dumfries Archives in the Ewart Library in Dumfries. It is closed at the moment.

I found this online which mentions James Gordon the founder of Primrose and Gordon:

https://www.primroseandgordon.co.uk/2018/08/30/a-timely-gift/

He was Provost of Dumfries in 1860 according to the plaque on the clock.

As the firm is still in existence it may hold an archive which would include this information. This is their website:
