Need help tracking down military records for a James Edward Rooney who served in the RHA as a Gunner. I know he was awarded the Mons Medal and had a son called Edward Rooney born in 1940. He appears to have been a career solider. His wife was a Minnie Wilson.

I found this on the national archive medal index cards is this the same person.  Not RHA but East Lancashire Regiment.

Not sure that the East Lancashire Regiment James Edward Rooney is the correct one.  Service record states that his wife was Alice Smithson, and daughter was Dorothy Eileen.

Over 60% of WW1 documents were lost in a fire due to bombing in WW2.

There is a reference to being a career soldier - did he serve after 1920.

From 1920 the documents are with MOD.

received James Rooney's medals into my private museum, donated by his grandson.

The Mons Star, War Medal and Victory Medal, engraved on the Mons star, Aug Nov 1914 plus the bar and rose on the ribbon, 5176 GNR. J.E.Rooney R.F.A.........

The British War and Victory Medal Roll for the Royal Field Artillery states that he was discharged P.U. on 10 March 1919, I'm not sure what the abbreviation P.U. means, other soldiers on the same page have either P.U. or T.E. next to their discharge date. Unless he re-enlisted, his service seems to have ended in 1919. Presumably though he was a pre-war regular given his first entry to France was on 19 August 1914.

There is also a disability pension record for Gunner James Edward Rooney, service number 5176, serving with the Royal Field Artillery, and discharged on 10 March 1919, so the same man as above. Unfortunately I do not have a Fold3 subscription to view the actual card, all that I can add is that he was apparently born in 1880, resident in Ballymacateer, Lurgan, and serving in the Northern Ireland military service region at the time of his discharge.

The Civil Registration Births Index for Ireland also has the birth of a James Edward Rooney recorded in the December quarter of 1881 in Lurgan, Ireland, so given where he was living at the time of his discharge, possibly the same man.
