1939, burial of infant query, knowledge needed.
« on: Wednesday 29 July 20 14:56 BST (UK) »
Hello.

My question is , If a child was born on 31st Dec 1938, then 13 days later died,

would his burial be registered in the parish register.

I have His death certificate,

The story goes that He was buried up the side of the church in Mumby, Lincolnshire.

thank you from Eilleen.

Not sure but the baby might not have been baptised, now whether that would make a difference to where in the Churchyard he was allowed to be interred I am not sure.
Hopefully another RootsChatter  can give more information.

Have you contacted the church to ask for the register to be checked?

My mother’s elder brother was still born in the mid 1930’s. He wasn’t christened and isn’t in the local churchyard where most of the family is.  Instead he is buried in the local cemetery.  You might find this is the case.

I don’t know if you use Twitter but there were some recently some tweets about unbaptised babies having clandestine burials in churchyards.

I find that very sad, it wasn't  the childs fault they weren't baptised,  I do believe it isn't to late to be baptised even after death, perhaps someone would correct me on that

Hello Eilleen,
I see no reason why a burial would not have been recorded if clergy were involved. Even if external clergy performed the service (military funeral) it is still recorded.

There is a period, after the birth, when the newborn is considered to be "in a state of Grace". That is to say, it is not his fault that he was not baptised.

The Roman Catholic Church is far more strict about these things, BUT as far as the Church of England is concerned, any confirmed Christian can baptise another person. My grandmother baptised her own first born child as it was dying two days after birth. It was recorded as a private baptism.

Many churches have a set burial pattern so as to make best use of a limited land resource. The Great and the Good and the clergy at the East end, Families together, singles separate to one side. Babies and infants were often buried close to the Church walls - for protection as it were.

For an early infant death, can the death certificate be issued but without any corresponding Civil Birth Registration?
What are the rules regarding Stillbirth and Infant death?

My son arrived early 5 days before Christmas (1976) and we were advised to register him before the offices were closed for Christmas........in case we had to also register his death when they reopened.

Stillbirths have a separate register.

If it's a neonatal death and the baby hadn't been registered by the time of death the registrar will do them both at the same time - so the parents come away with two certificates

If stillborn there is just one certificate - a certificate of stillbirth, which is a seperate register
