George Patterson 1835 Greenlawalls Northumberland
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 00:50 BST (UK) »
George Patterson was born in 1835 in Greenlawalls, Northumberland. He was the eldest son of Ralph Patterson and his first wife Mary Blains. George had six younger siblings Jane, Edward, Robert, Ralph and James. Their mother Mary Blains died in 1852 and Ralph married Mary Emery and had a further 9 children with his 2nd wife so rather a large fammily before he died in a mining accident in Netherton.

George Patterson on the 1841 and 1851 census was living in Ford but by the 1861 census he was living in Hartley with wife Ellen, son Ralph born 1858 in Bedlington, daughter Isabelle born 1860 in Cowpen Square and Thomas born 1861 in Hartley. All of their births on GRO bring up mothers maiden name as Richardson. There is a marriage in all Saints Necastle for a George Patterson and Eleanor Richardson, Grooms fathers name Ralph Patterson.

Well after the 1861 census George Patterson and Eleanor seemed to have disappeared, Ralph and Thomas on the 1871 Census are living with Ralph Pattersons widowed second wife Mary and I cant find Isabel.

So I was contacted on ancestry from a descendent of Ralph Patterson. It appears that George Patterson his father emigrated to America between 1866 and 1868. Ralph must have followed sometime after the 1871 census as he is again staying at Mary Pattersons.Ralph was his great grandfather and the information he has for him is his date of birth was 1862 He married Edith Hesse in Rich Hill MO then lived in Rosedale IN until his death in 1919. They had 3 children Ethel, Mary and Virginia
This is where it is confusing George Patterson marries Bridget Roberts of Ireland in Brazil. I have attached a copy of the marriage and it has the correct parents for George. It was the 2nd marriage for both of them. The 2nd document I have attached is the death notice and on the notice it states he leaves behind 4 children Ralph, george, Mary J and Mark. I have copies of the 1870 census for Springfield with George, Bridget, George and Mary J both of them born in Indiana and 1880 Census in Fountain County with George, Bridget, George, Mary and Mark. What I was wondering is did George abandon Eleanor or did she go with him? Did George have another son called Ralph as the dates of birth dont match and neither do the mothers maiden name?

The death certificate in Indiana for Ralph Patterson born 28 February 1862 death of 13 April 1919 has parents George Patterson and Jane.

1910 census for same Ralph and wife Edith says he came over in 1883

ADDED
1900 census says he came over 1881

you mention the 1870 census, if this is your George Patterson, born England circa 1835,
the child George Patterson is aged 8 ,and born in America, so George would have had to emigrate well before 1862 ,and you think he left circa 1868

Yes thats what is wierd about it. On the census in America, Ralph is not on it on the 1870 or 1880 census but that would tie in with him living with his grandmother still in Netherton. Stephen who contacted me said that he thinks that George was born in 1866 in England before George Senior emmigrated.

The death of Ralph Patterson ties in with what he said that his mothers name was Jane and he was born in 1862 but Im not finding a birth that would match that. Its possible that George and Elleanor broke up after the 1861 census and he might have fathered a child to a Jane. The marriage for George in Brazil seems to be the right George. Its Ralph that dosent add up. He has just sent me a will for Bridget who mentions Ralph, Thomas, Mary J and Mark so that is two of Georges children to Elleanor. I dont know what happened to Elleanor as there are no deaths or why Ralph and Thomas were living with Georges grandmother.

1870 George s/b age 3 not 8 born Indiana, in 1880 says born Illinois.Pity the records are not very good until 1908

I notice Bridget doesn't mention Ralph?
Bridget also owns the property that is to go to the children, George her husband gets 50 dollars.

He only married her 6 months before she died January 1891 (14 June 1890), they had been together for more than 20 years perhaps so there would be no dispute over the property.

By the way you do realize Brazil is in Indiana (near Terre Haute) and not the country.
