Census with “ changeling “
« on: Thursday 30 July 20 12:28 BST (UK) »
I have just remembered a  UK census about1881 and I was intrigued by the description , it was a family . The man was a furniture maker , he had wife and several children . In his house were two apprentices both different names and ages . In the relationship section it said each was Changeling . I wonder what that means in this concept . Unfortunately I didn’t safe census . Thanks Fred .

A changeling is a fairy creature left in place of a stolen human child and raised in a human household.

Your apprentices must have been left by the fairies.

(It was also a synonym for imbecile, though.)

From the OED
Changeling An extremely stupid or foolish person; an idiot, an imbecile. Now historic.
Probably with reference to the idea that children with undesirable physical or mental characteristics were changelings in sense A. 1a.
A 1a  A child secretly substituted for another in infancy; a child supposedly left by fairies in exchange for one stolen. Often used to refer to a child who is considered undesirable, or who does not resemble his or her family.
